Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Encode text or any file as Base64, Base64URL or a data URI, and decode it back, with exact error positions.
About this tool
Encode text as Base64 or Base64URL, or turn any file into Base64 or a data: URI. Text is encoded as UTF-8, so accented letters and emoji survive the round trip, and images get ready-made HTML and CSS snippets.
Decoding reads standard and URL-safe Base64, with or without padding and line breaks, and data: URIs too. A wrong character or broken padding is pointed out at its exact position. If the result is text it’s shown as text; otherwise you see what kind of file it is, a hex view, and can download it.
Base64 makes data about a third larger. Inline data URIs suit small icons; larger images load faster as separate files that browsers can cache.
What’s the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?
Base64URL swaps + and / for - and _, which are safe in URLs and file names, and usually drops the = padding. JWTs and many APIs use it.
Is Base64 encryption?
No. It’s an encoding anyone can reverse. Never use it to hide passwords or secrets.
