About this tool

Drop any files to find out what they really are. A file’s name and the type your system reports both come from its extension, which anyone can change; this reads the bytes instead, and tells you when the name doesn’t match.

It also looks inside where that helps. A ZIP could be a plain archive, a Word or Excel file, an Android app or a Java package, and only its contents tell them apart. PDFs are checked for JavaScript, attachments and earlier saved versions; programs show their processor and kind; videos show whether they can start playing before they’ve downloaded; images show any data hidden after their end.

Each file links to the tools that can open it, and the whole report can be downloaded as JSON. Files are read on your device and never uploaded.

Is the result always right?

Signatures at the start of a file are very reliable. Text formats like CSV, YAML or Markdown have no signature, so they’re recognised by their content and shown as likely rather than certain.
