About this tool
Print a title, the file name, the date, page numbers or a reference number at the top or bottom of every page. There is a box for each of the left, centre and right of the header and footer, and short codes fill in the details for you: {n} for the page number, {total} for the page count, {file}, {date} and {bates}.
Switch on Bates numbering for legal and records work: a prefix and a number that rises with every page, such as DOC-000001. Choose the starting number and how many digits to use. Apply it all to every page or only a range, and watch the preview to see it on the page.
The text is drawn into the pages and the pages themselves are not re-rendered. It uses the built-in PDF fonts (Western European languages). Everything happens in your browser, so confidential files are not uploaded.
What is Bates numbering?
It is a running identifier stamped on every page of a document set, like ACME-000001, used in legal and records work so every page can be cited exactly. Turn on Bates numbering and put {bates} in a header or footer box.
How do I add a header and footer to a PDF?
Open the PDF here, type your text in the header and footer boxes (left, centre and right), and press Add to pages. Use {n} and {total} for page numbers and {date} for today’s date.
Can I show the file name on every page?
Yes. Put {file} in any box and it is replaced with the PDF’s file name.
Can I add headers to only some pages?
Yes. Type a range such as 2-10 under “Only these pages”. Page counts and Bates numbers then run across the pages you chose.
