Compress Video

Make a video smaller by quality preset or by target file size, with a lower resolution or frame rate if you like.

Drop a video to compress it

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. It stays on this device.

How to compress a video

  1. Choose your video

Drop a file onto the page or pick one from your device.

  2. Pick a preset or a size

Small, Balanced or High, or choose Size and enter the megabytes you need.

  3. Adjust if you like

Lower the resolution or frame rate for a smaller file. The estimate updates as you change things.

  4. Compress and compare

Press Compress, play the result, then download it.

About this tool

Compress Video makes a video file smaller by encoding it again at a lower bitrate and, if you like, a lower resolution or frame rate. Pick a preset, or choose a target size in megabytes and the tool works out the bitrate that should land near it.

It never aims above what your file already uses, so a video that is already compact is not made bigger, and it never scales a video up. The estimate shown before you start is a guide: encoders land a little over or under depending on how much is happening in the picture.

Compression runs in your browser using its own video encoders, which keeps your video private and avoids waiting for an upload. How fast it is depends on your device, and very long or high-resolution videos take longer. The result is built in memory, so extremely large outputs are refused with a clear message.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is compressed on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere. It works with your internet connection off once the page has loaded.

How do I get a video under a size limit?

Choose Size and type the limit in megabytes, for example 25 for many email and chat services. The tool sets the bitrate to aim for that size. Because it is an estimate, aim a little under the limit.

Why did my file barely shrink, or get bigger?

A video that was already well compressed has little left to save, and re-encoding it can even add size. The tool warns you when it expects this. Try Small, a lower resolution or a lower frame rate.

How much quality do I lose?

Compression always trades quality for size. Balanced is a good start for sharing; High keeps the original size with a gentle reduction. Check the result in the preview before you download.

Why can’t it compress my video?

Compressing needs your browser to decode and encode the video. If it cannot decode the codec (some H.264 or HEVC files in certain browsers), try Chrome or Edge on a computer. The Video Info tool shows what your browser supports.
