Cut the start and end off a video. Choose a fast cut with no re-encoding, or a frame-exact one.

Drop a video to trim it

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. It stays on this device.

How to trim a video

  1. Choose your video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file onto the page, or pick one from your device.

  2. Set the start and end

Drag the handles under the preview, or type exact times. The preview jumps to each frame.

  3. Pick Fast or Exact

Fast is instant and lossless. Exact starts on your precise frame but re-encodes.

  4. Trim and download

Press Trim video, check the result, then download it.

About this tool

Trim Video cuts the start and end off a clip and saves the part in between. Drag the two handles, type exact times, or press Use playhead to take the current position in the preview, and the video jumps to that frame as you go.

There are two ways to cut. Fast copies the video as it is, so it finishes almost instantly and loses no quality, but a cut can only begin at a keyframe, so the clip may start a little before the moment you chose. The summary tells you exactly where it will start. Exact re-encodes the clip so it begins on your chosen frame, which takes longer and encodes the picture again.

It works with MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files and keeps the original format. Everything runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is read and cut inside your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. It still works with your internet connection off once the page has loaded.

Why does a fast trim start before the time I chose?

Video is stored as occasional full frames (keyframes) with small changes in between, and a copy can only begin at a full frame. The tool looks up the keyframe before your start and tells you where the clip will begin. The extra seconds are picture only, with no sound. Choose Exact to start on your frame.

Which should I use, Fast or Exact?

Use Fast for quick cuts where a second of lead-in does not matter, or to keep full quality. Use Exact when the first frame has to be precise, for example a clip that must start on a particular moment.

Does trimming reduce the quality?

Fast never does, because nothing is re-encoded. Exact encodes the clip again at about the bitrate of the original, so any change is small, but it is not identical.

Why is Exact unavailable for my video?

An exact trim needs your browser to decode and encode the video. If it cannot decode the video’s codec (some H.264 or HEVC files in certain browsers), only Fast works. Chrome or Edge on a computer support the most formats.
