About this tool
Convert Video changes a video from one format to another, for example MOV to MP4, or MP4 to WebM. When the new format can hold the video and audio already in your file, they are copied across untouched, which is instant and loses no quality. Only when they do not fit is the video encoded again, and the summary tells you which of the two will happen before you start.
The codec lists only offer what your browser can actually write. A format or codec your device cannot encode is greyed out and marked, rather than offered and then failing. If you need H.264, AV1 or another codec and it is unavailable, a different browser or computer may support it.
Conversion runs in your browser using its own video codecs, so the file is never uploaded. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files can be read; AVI, WMV and FLV cannot.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Conversion happens on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Will converting reduce the quality?
Not if the new format can hold your video as it is: then it is copied, with no change at all. If it has to be re-encoded, the tool keeps the bitrate close to the original so quality stays similar, and the Quality setting lets you choose otherwise.
Why is a codec greyed out?
Browsers differ in which codecs they can encode. Options marked “not supported here” cannot be written by this browser and device. The table underneath shows what yours can read and write.
Can it convert AVI, WMV or FLV?
No. It reads MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. Convert other formats to MP4 with a desktop app first.
Which format should I choose?
MP4 plays almost everywhere. WebM is a good choice for the web and works in all modern browsers. MKV holds nearly any codec and many tracks, and MOV suits Apple software.
