About this tool

Crop Video cuts away the edges of a video and keeps only the part you choose. Drag the box over the picture, pick a shape such as 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1, or type exact pixel values for the left, top, width and height.

A slider under the preview lets you move through the video, so you can check that the crop works for the whole clip and not just the first frame. Cropping keeps the original length and the audio, and the picture inside the box is not scaled.

Cropping re-encodes the video in your browser, so it is never uploaded. Every frame is decoded and encoded again, so longer or higher-resolution videos take more time, and the result is saved at about the same bitrate as the original.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is cropped on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How do I crop a video to a square?

Open Shape and choose 1:1. The box becomes square and you can drag it to the part of the picture you want to keep.

Does cropping change the length or the sound?

No. The length is the same and the audio is copied untouched whenever the format can hold it. To shorten the video, use Trim Video.

Why does cropping take a while?

Removing part of every frame means the whole video is decoded and encoded again. Short clips take seconds; long or high-resolution ones take longer.

Why can’t it crop my video?

Cropping needs your browser to decode and encode the video. If it cannot decode the codec (some H.264 or HEVC files in certain browsers), try Chrome or Edge on a computer.
