About this tool
Rotate Video turns a video that was filmed sideways or upside down. Choose 90° right, 180° or 90° left, and save a new file. The summary shows the new size before you start.
In MP4 and MOV files the rotation is stored as a flag in the file, so turning is instant and the picture is not re-encoded at all. WebM and MKV have nowhere to store that flag, so the picture itself is turned and encoded again, which takes longer.
If a player you use ignores the flag, switch on Bake into the picture, which turns the actual pixels so it looks right everywhere. Nothing is uploaded; it all happens in your browser.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is rotated on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Does rotating reduce the quality?
Not for MP4 and MOV, where only a flag changes and the picture is untouched. For WebM and MKV, or when you bake the rotation in, the video is encoded again at about the same bitrate.
Why does my video still play sideways?
A few older players ignore the rotation flag. Rotate again with Bake into the picture switched on, which turns the pixels themselves.
Can I rotate by a different angle?
Only quarter turns are offered: 90° right, 180° and 90° left. Other angles would need the picture to be cropped or padded.
Why can’t it rotate my video?
Turning a WebM or MKV, or baking the rotation in, needs your browser to decode and encode the video. MP4 and MOV files that are rotated by flag work even when the browser cannot decode them.
