About this tool

Extract Video Frame saves any single moment of a video as an image. Play or scrub to the moment you want, step forward or back one frame at a time, then save the picture as a PNG, JPEG or WebP file. It is a quick way to make a thumbnail or cover image, or to capture a still for a document.

PNG keeps every pixel exactly. JPEG and WebP are smaller, and you choose the quality. You can also scale the image down so the long side is 1920, 1280, 640 or 320 pixels.

The frame is taken from the same picture the player shows, so it matches what you see. It all happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The frame is drawn and saved on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

How do I get an exact frame?

Pause the video near the moment, then use the single-frame buttons to step to the exact picture. The time is shown between the buttons and added to the file name.

Which format should I choose?

PNG for the sharpest copy and for screenshots, text or graphics. JPEG for photos that need to be small and work everywhere. WebP is smaller still but not every app opens it.

Can I make a thumbnail?

Yes. Pick the moment, choose JPEG or WebP, and set a smaller size such as 640 pixels on the long side.

Why can’t it save a frame from my video?

It uses your browser’s own player, so the browser has to be able to play the video. Some H.264 or HEVC files do not play in every browser. Try Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer.
