About this tool

Video to GIF turns a part of a video into an animated GIF. Drag the handles to choose the start and end, pick a width and a frame rate, and the tool tells you how many frames it will make and roughly how large the file will be before you start.

GIFs are far larger than video for the same moment, so the tool keeps them short: up to 30 seconds and 600 frames, never wider than the video itself. By default every frame shares one 256-colour palette, which stops colours flickering; you can switch on a palette per frame for footage whose colours change a lot.

Everything runs in your browser using the same colour reduction as the image tools, so the video is never uploaded.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The GIF is made on your device, in your browser, and nothing is sent anywhere.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIF is an old format that compresses motion poorly. Shorten the clip, lower the width or the frame rate, and switch off smoothing to make it smaller. For anything long, a short MP4 or WebM is far smaller and looks better.

What frame rate and width should I use?

10 frames per second at 480 pixels wide is a good balance for sharing. Go higher for smooth action and lower for a smaller file.

What does “Colours for every frame” do?

A GIF can only show 256 colours. By default one set is chosen for the whole clip, which looks steady. With this on, each frame gets its own set, which suits footage that changes colour but makes the file bigger.

Why can’t it make a GIF from my video?

It needs your browser to decode the video. Some H.264 or HEVC files do not decode in every browser. Try Chrome or Edge on a computer.
